Cessation VL - 2 IS - April Supplement PY - 2016 ID - Scott2016 TI - Cigarette smoking and bacterial infection AB - Smoking cigarettes and exposure to tobacco environmental smoke increase the risk for many bacterial infections and / or exacerbates the symptoms of others. Many such infections can be life threatening. The underlying reasons for increased susceptibility are less clear. This talk will introduce examples of smoking-related bacterial diseases; and the concepts of tobacco-augmented bacterial virulence; and immune system dysregulation that may decrease resistance to microbial infections.
